Spam Scanning
Tired of receiving
dozens of unwanted, unsolicited e-mails every time you download your
e-mail? We can help. KCI is now offering SPAM filtering. Besides being
"Spiced Ham", SPAM is a term that was coined to describe unwanted or
unsolicited e-mail.
If you wish
to take advantage of our SPAM filtering, contact our office at
522-8107. If you have activated SPAM filtering, read the
following instructions to install your SPAM filtering.
1. Click on
the Account Info link at the top of this
page.
2. A
security alert will appear. Click Yes (it will
appear every time you access this page).
3. You will
see KCI USER PORTAL at the top of the page.
Enter your username (ie. username@kci.net) and password, the
click Login. IMPORTANT! YOUR
USERNAME WILL ALWAYS END WITH "@KCI.NET". IT WILL NOT WORK
OTHERWISE.
4. Once
inside, you will see Preferences, Account Info, Dial-up Usage, and SPAM Scanning. Click SPAM Scanning. NOTE. SPAM Scanning will only appear if you have had our office
activate SPAM Filtering for your account.
5. You can
now choose how to setup your SPAM Filter. Read below for
instructions on SPAM Filtering (You can also choose whether
or not you want us to virus scan your e-mails).
SPAM
Filtering Instructions
You should
see a Virus Scanning and a SPAM
Scanning section. Disregard the Virus Scanning section,
unless you wish to deactivate virus scanning for your account.
The SPAM
Scanning section should look similar to the following (the
form below is not functional):
It is
recommended that you choose the third option, "Prepend
***SPAM*** to Subject of Spam messages." The reason for
this is that there is always a possibility that legitimate
e-mail can be mistaken as SPAM. If you tell the filter to "Delete messages idenifided as Spam," it is possible
that legitimate e-mail may be lost permanently. If you choose to
the option to "Delete messages identified as Spam" we cannot be
held responsible for any legitimate e-mail that is deleted due
to a false identification as SPAM. THIS IS YOUR ONLY
WARNING. DO NOT CONTACT US ABOUT LOST E-MAILS IF YOU CHOOSE TO
DELETE MESSAGES IDENTIFIED AS SPAM.
Once you
choose "Prepend ***SPAM*** to Subject of Spam messages",
click the SAVE button (located below the form).
Anytime you make changes to your SPAM filter, you must click the
save button below the form to activate your changes
Now that you
have enabled the spam filter to Prepend ***SPAM*** to
Subject of Spam messages, any mail that comes to your
e-mail address that our server identifies as SPAM will have
"***SPAM***" in the subject of the message.
The next
setting is SPAM Detection Level. There are six
different levels of filtering: Encroaching, Aggressive,
Normal, Semi-Tolerant, Relaxed, Tag Spam Only. Encroaching is the highest level of filtering, but also
has a higher probability of mismarking a legitimate e-mail as
SPAM. Relaxed is the lowest level of filtering,
so you will not experience mismarked e-mail, but you will also
have a higher rate of SPAM getting through the filter
undetected. You can experiment with the level of filtering you
wish to use at your discretion.
Tag
Spam Only is not a filter level, but instead places a
score on each e-mail that comes to your inbox. This allows you
to see how e-mail gets scored for SPAM filtering so you can get
an idea of how the filter works.
Setting Up Message Rules in Outlook Express
Once you
have setup your SPAM filter, you now need to set up message
rules in Outlook Express. THIS ONLY APPLIES IF YOU CHOSE
"PREPEND ***SPAM*** TO SUBJECT OF SPAM MESSAGES".
A message
rule tells Outlook Express what to do with your messages once
they are downloaded to your inbox. The following instructions
detail how to create a message rule that moves all messages with
***SPAM*** in the e-mail's subject to Deleted Items.
1. Open
Outlook Express.
2. Open the Tools menu, go to Message Rules, and
click Mail in the sub-menu.
3. A New Mail Rule window should appear. In the first
section, "Select the Conditions for your rule",
place a check mark by "Where the subject contains
specific words."
4. In the
second section, "Select the Actions for your rule",
place a check mark by "Move it to specified folder."
5 In the
third section, "Rule Description", it should say, "Apply
this rule after the message arrives
Where the Subject line contains specific words Move it to the specified folder." Click contains specific words.
6. A window
entitled Type Specific Words should appear. In
the first blank type ***SPAM*** and then click
the Add button. Then click OK.
7. Next,
click specified folder. In the folder list that
appears select Deleted Items. Then click OK.
8. Click OK
on the New Mail Rule window. Then click OK on the Message Rules window.
9. Your
message rule should be complete. From now on, any mail with
***SPAM*** in the subject will be moved to your Deleted Items
upon arrival.
If
you become suspicious that some of your e-mails are being
mismarked as SPAM, look in your Deleted Items folder to view the
messages that were marked as SPAM.
